The Goddess Hanan

HanaLast December 31, 2019 we wrote on our Facebook page the name of Goddess Hanan as the Goddess of the Morning and the new beginning. We said that she is also the Filipino Goddess of the new Year. According to written text, it is mentioned that Hanan o Ana is the Daughter of Bathala and Sister of Mayari and Tala who are all of them a Demi God from a mortal mother who died after giving birth to the 3 Goddess. It is said that the first prayer of the day is given to Bathala, Apolaki, and her as a sign of a new day. She is specially important during the entrance of a new age or a new phase in a person’s life. People offer her bountiful harvests and prayers during the birth of a child, the womanhood or manhood of a child, the death of a person, entrance of the planting season, beginning of the harvest season, and start of a new annual cycle. These prayers are only conducted at the break of dawn.

In our studies, the belief and worship of the Diwata is mostly has Hindu influence such as the word Diwata is derived from the Sanskrit word Deva which means Divine. As i pray to the Goddess Hanan, i was lead to the Hindu Goddess of Food and Nourishment which is the Goddess Annapurna. Annapurna is an Avatar of Parvati the wife of Shiva. In sanskrit Anna means food while Purna means complete, full and perfect. I remember that our Mother give importance to the first meal of the Day. It is said that this meal should not be skipped by everyone as eating breakfast will make you strong all day.  Well taking breakfast now for me has new meaning and that is through Breakfast we honor and receive the blessings of the Goddess Hanan and Annapurna. Probably one of the Goddess Blessings in the morning is Coffee, Sinangag, Tuyo and Pandesal.
