Mayari na! PagAsatin!
The creation myth of the Teduray Indigenous People, it centers around a female deity called Minaden, who shaped the world and the first creatures living on it. She fashioned human beings from mud. Having done this, she placed the sun between the earth and the sky and brought forth daylight. The world is believed to be divided into eight layers, the topmost layers occupied by Tulus, who was Minaden’s brother. The Tulus was also known by other names, such as Meketefu and Sualla.
The first two human beings created by Minaden begun to grow, but after sometime, they had not yet begotten any offspring. Meketefu came down from the skyworld and saw that the male reproductive organ was as small as a tiny red pepper, and that of the female was as big as a snail shell. Furthermore, their noses were upside down and whenever it rained, they caught water, making two human beings sick.
Meketefu decided to create his own clay figures of a man and woman. Using an old bolo, he struck the female figure, wounding her where the legs joined together. As he did so, the handle of the bolo flew off and struck to the middle part of the male clay figure. He also turned their noses right side up, so they would not take in rainwater. Soon after, the two creatures were able to bring forth a child into the world. But no food was available to nourish themselves and the child eventually died. But the world had no soil and the child could not be buried. And so the father begged the god Meketefu to give them soil.
Much later, various types of vegetation sprouted from the plot of the earth where the child was buried. One part of the plot gave forth plants and lime for chewing. The hands turned into bananas, the nails into nuts, the teeth into corn, the brains into lime, the bones into cassava, and the ears into betel leaf
In Teruray Pantheon, they call God as Tulus for being the Chief of all good Spirits and bestow gifts and favors upon Human beings. Minaden is a female deity who creates the world and mankind from mud. She is also called as Sinonggol who lives in Bonggo.
Bonngo is the land of the Death.
Minaden taught humans to wear clothes and speak new dialects.
Meketefu is the Brother of Minaden. He is also called by the people as Sualla which is an Islamic Terminology for Meketefu that is derived from the word Subhanallah which means God is Perfect.
In Tiruray Cosmogony, Relationships can be developed between Human Beings and to the Spirits of the Unseen world. And this is called Tiyawan. The Universe is a abode of various types of Etew or People. The Keilawan are the Human Beings while the Maginalew are the Spirits. Those people who can develop relationships with Maginalew must posses special powers or charisma in order to do so. And those special people are called beliyan that becomes a religious leader.
Beliyan are consultants of leaders from Inged or neighborhood in terms of planting and harvesting. They communicate with the spirits in behalf of the ordinary people. They also conduct Spiritual Tiyawan which is a formal adjudicatory discussion with the Spirits. They are the mediator between Humans and spirits and were specially gifted and powerful kefeduwan or expert in customary laws.
The Tiruray also believed in Bad Spirits that they call as Busaw. They are malignant spirits that causes illness and misfortunes. It is also believed that these spirits quench their thirst from blood and hunger for flesh by causing illness and death. But with the Tiruray, Busaw can be avoided by using Charms and Amulets.
Ungit is a Basic Charm that used by Tiruray to counteract and avoid Busaw. It is made of powerful mystical Leaves and Grass, wrapped in cloth and bound with vine lashing. Aside from counteracting Busaw, it also brings good luck to its bearer specially on hunting. It could also be used in attracting woman but it will loose its efficacy in successful hunting when it is used for lust.
Rituals are performed in order to establish good relations with the Spirits. This is done by feasting on glutinous rice and hard boiled egg with ritual offerings to the spirits. Ritual offerings to the spirit is made by preparing a small bamboo tube and filled it with glutinous rice. When this significant ritual act has been performed, the exchange of portions of glutinous rice is distributed among participants. Another form of ritual offering is dancing while the beliyan play that togo or a small drum.
